Monday Motivation from Ragan Smith

From Olympic Alternate to P&G Champ, Ragan is ready for her turn to rule the world of U.S Gymnastics.

Ragan is now considered a seasoned veteran of gymnastics, and one of the only ones that has made their return immediately to the sport after the Rio Olympics.

With a steady performance at P&G’s, however making room for improvement, Smith says she feels like she knows much more about what she is doing now, more so than in the past.

It is now time to build up for Tokyo.

An excerpt from USA Today;

“For the last four years, the American women joked that Simone Biles should get her own division so they could have a crack at a title. Well, they’ve got their chance now and it’s clear that ruling the gymnastics world is not quite as easy as the Olympic champ made it look.

Ragan Smith had 57.4 points Friday, the highest all-around score in the world this year, and has a commanding lead after the first of two days of competition at the P&G Championships. Riley McCusker is 1.3 points behind going into Sunday’s finals…”

A Guide to Choosing The Right Sport For Your Child

Youth sports are a big part of families’ lives today. Although it’s difficult to know exactly how many children in the United States are actively involved in organized sports, it’s estimated that more than 21 million American kids participate in children’s sports on a regular basis. For kids, youth sports represent an opportunity to play a game they love while learning about themselves and their peers. Not only do they get some important exercise and help develop their growing bodies, they also learn valuable concepts such as teamwork, sportsmanship and socialization that will help their emotional and mental development.

Yet none of those benefits can be gained if your child doesn’t stick with his or her sport, which is why it’s crucial to choose the right sport for your child at the beginning. Trying to push a child into a sport that he or she is not ready for can lead to the child abandoning it. Choosing a sport that requires too much of a commitment from a time or financial perspective can mean you may have to pull your child out of it. To avoid these potential problems, refer to the accompanying guide. It can help you choose the right sport for your son or daughter so he or she gets the most out of the experience.

Choosing The Right Sport For Your Child – Answering these questions can help ensure that your child gets the maximum benefit from sports participation.

Does Your Child Like Any Sports More Than Others?

If your son shows an affinity for basketball, or if your daughter has expressed a desire to take up archery, for example, you at least have a starting point to find a sport your child will enjoy.

What Are Your Child’s Physical Traits?

Your child’s physical traits can help determine whether a sport is right for him or her. For example, taller children may excel at basketball, while children who are stockier may find they do better at football or wrestling.

How Old Is Your Child?

Certain sports are better fits for older children because they require more physical coordination, fine motor skills or teamwork. Sports that require complicated strategy such as football, for example, may not be a good fit for younger children.

What Is Your Child’s Personality?

Some kids respond better to pressure than others. Some kids like to be part of a team while others prefer to participate in solo activities. Make sure the sport you sign your child up for is suited for his or her personality.

Do You Have Time for the Sport?

Because many families have busy schedules, some sports with a higher-commitment level for practices and games might not make much sense for them. Some sports such as baseball and softball also sometimes require traveling to tournaments and road games.

How Much Does the Sport Cost?

Some sports such as tennis or basketball don’t require much in the way of equipment, whereas hockey and football need lots of equipment. Always keep your family’s budget in mind when looking into different youth sports.

Is Your Child Having Fun?

Perhaps most important: Make sure the sport your child chooses is one he or she has fun playing. Otherwise, the time, effort and money your family puts into it may all be for nothing once your child decides he or she no longer wants to participate.

Gymnast of the Month: August

Gymnast of the month is……Sophia Diaz from @diazdolls

You may recognize Sophia from her flipping around on our Nimble Sports Gymnastics Horizontal Bar all over Instagram!

An excerpt from Sophia’s Mom;

“Sophia started gymnastics as a toddler in diapers in a mommy and me program… by the age 5 she started begging to take gymnastics! We tried a few places and she truly enjoyed it so we decided we would permanently enroll her in a place that truly matched her personality! In January of 2017, we enrolled her at her current gym. She did a month of recreational classes before she tested out and was asked to join pre-team. Sophia did pre-team from February until end of June and was asked to join their level 2 team! Sophia has such a drive and determination to learn new things and will continue to work at it until she can do it! I say work but when I see her on her equipment she is having so much fun. She was fortunate enough to receive a Nimble Sports Little Gym Deluxe set for her 5th birthday and has truly loved every piece of it. She is not only motivated to grow herself, but enjoys helping others (especially her younger sister Olivia) and her cousins…”

Sophia has always loved to perform floor routines, but is growing to love the beam which is said to be her most difficult event.

Watch for Sophia’s features on our @nimblesports Instagram Page!

Laurie Hernandez is ‘Dancing with the Stars’

After receiving two medals in the Rio Olympics, Laurie Hernandez is back and ready for more competition. Although this time her competition is different. This time she is competing with celebrities instead of olympians and the sport is dancing instead of gymnastics.

Just a month after the Olympics in Rio, 16-year old Olympic gymnast Laurie Hernandez is a contestant on the new season of Dancing With the Stars . The season premiered on Monday September 12, 2016 on ABC. The show pairs celebrities with dance professionals. There are 13 total celebrity-dance professional pairs on the show and they all compete against each other for judge’s points and audience votes. The pair with the lowest combined votes is eliminated from the show every week until only one pair remains.

The new season has plenty of competition with some of the celebrity contestants being top notch athletes just as Hernandez. Fellow olympian Ryan Lochte and NFL player Calvin Johnson are the other featured athletes out of the group of celebrities on the show.

Hernandez is partnered with professional dancer Valentin Chmerkovskiy. The duo took first place in the premier, which doesn’t come as a shocker to anyone who watched her shine at the Olympics. It would appear as though Hernandez has a leg up on the competition because of her impressive background in gymnastics, which is not all that different from dancing. Chmerkovskiy is a two-time World Dance Champion and Hernandez skills in gymnastics will aid her in mastering tricky dance moves to come this season. Good things are expected to come from the Hernandez-Chmerkovskiy pair.

rs_634x1024-160909133134-634-val-laurie-dwts-abc

On the season premier, the pair scored 31 out of 40 possible points to come in first. They have been the fan favorite throughout the show, and were were dominating the competition throughout the fourth week where they scored 32 points, coming in first again and dominating the competition. In the fifth week, however, the pair gave what some called a “disappointing” performance. Now, in week seven, they bounced back with an impressive performance dancing the quickstep and earning 34 points. Team Valaur is heading to week 8!

You can vote for Hernandez by dialing 1-800-868-3407 or online at either or Facebook. Don’t forget to stay tuned on Hernandez’s progress Monday’s at 8p.m. on ABC and the Nimble Sports Blog anytime!
